The program committee invites all composers currently engaged in graduate or advanced undergraduate study to submit scores for the 15th annual meeting of the Midwest Graduate Music Consortium (MGMC), to be held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on March 25-26, 2011. We welcome pieces for 1-7 musicians of up to 12 minutes in duration. Ensembles should be chamber music oriented, for either standard groups (string quartet, etc.) or common extended ensembles (e.g., “Pierrot” ensemble), including electronics, multimedia, and/or solo voice (any standard voice type).  The winning submissions will be performed at the New Music Concert on Friday night, March 25th — all winning composers are required to attend. The concert will be presented in conjunction with the UW School of Music’s Contemporary Chamber Ensemble. Pieces using unorthodox or non-Western instruments (including specialized electronics) may be considered as long as the composer is able to supply players and technology. Any unusual performing techniques or notation should be explained clearly in the score.

Only electronic submissions will be considered: please submit one score with a recording if possible (MIDI realizations are acceptable) by January 3rd, 2011. The scores and recordings should be submitted electronically as PDFs and mp3s to composition chair Garreth Broesche at uwmgmc@gmail.com. (In the case of particularly large files special arrangements might be needed.) Each applicant must submit their scores and recordings as attachments containing the title of their piece but does not contain their name, email address, affiliation, or other identifying features. The e-mail accompanying the submitted piece should include the applicant’s name, affiliation, email address, and phone number and should also detail any technological aids needed for the proposed piece.

Pieces that have been selected for previous MGMC new music concerts are ineligible. Late entries or entries not adhering to the instructions above will not be considered for evaluation. Works including copyrighted text should include proof of permission to use that text as an attachment in the submission email. Please direct any questions regarding submissions to Garreth Broesche at uwmgmc@gmail.com.

Submissions will be evaluated anonymously, and applicants will be informed of the evaluation committee’s decision by Tuesday, February 1st , 2011.
